What are the Fair Play Awards in Cycling?
Most of the grand tours will have a fair play award which is awarded based, on a descending basis, on the number of warnings or infringements the team receives. So for example if a team receives a penalty for littering or a sticky bottle they’ll receive a point, which actually brings them down in the standings.
It’s not taken too seriously, and intended to keep teams playing it fair and to direct negative media attention to those teams that aren’t and potentially have so much money they’re willing to pay all the fines for the micro gains during the race.
It’s funny to view the list at times and see some teams with zero infringements while other teams’ infringements can rack up into the hundreds.
